Just outside the village of Tatul, community of Momchilgrad, province of Kardjhali , there are ruins of a Thracian fortress.
The most interesting place around the fortress is the sanctuary which, according to Ivan Venedikov, was dedicated to Orpheus. In a large rock are hewn out two rock vaults, eight steps and a niche where a ritual plate should be placed. The researchers believe that the sanctuary dates back to the 12 th century BC. In the Middle Age the fortress was restored to finally decline after the falling of Bulgaria under the Ottoman yoke.
The fortress is located 200- 300 m to the south of the village of Tatul and the village is about 35 km to the town of Kardjali.
